Belmont: Savedbythelight takes Sands Point

David Grening|Jun 16, 2003

ELMONT, N.Y. - For the second straight day, Richard Migliore guided the longest shot on the board in a five-horse field to a stakes victory at Belmont Park.

On Sunday, Migliore piloted Savedbythelight to a front-running 5 3/4-length score in the $114,600 Sands Point Stakes for 3-year-old fillies before a Father's Day crowd of 17,035 at Belmont. On Saturday, Migliore had guided Iron Deputy to a gate-to-wire upset in the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap.

The Sands Point was originally carded for the turf, but Saturday's heavy rain forced the race to a fast main track. It was the fourth New York Racing Association stakes forced to the dirt this year. The race lost its Grade 3 status pending review by the Graded Stakes Committee.
