Trainer Christophe Clement entered a pair of contenders in both of Saturday’s graded turf stakes at Belmont Park, but given the forecast it is uncertain whether either will run. In Za Approval, Clement would have the horse to beat in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Knickerbocker Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. But the forecast for rain Thursday and Friday and the likelihood of less than firm ground Saturday could result in him scratching the horse. Already this year, Clement has scratched Za Approval from the Fourstardave and Bernard Baruch, a pair of Grade 2 events at Saratoga. “It’s a waste of a race to run him on soft turf. We know that,” Clement said Wednesday morning. “The forecast is 100 percent chance of rain Thursday and Friday. Where we go next, I’m not sure.” Za Approval won the Appleton and Red Bank – both Grade 3 stakes – earlier this year before finishing second to Obviously in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Betfair Hollywood Park and second to Wise Dan in the Woodbine Mile. If Za Approval scratches, the horse to beat in the Knickerbocker becomes Boisterous, who won this race each of the past two years. Others entered include Howe Great, London Lane, Mr. Commons, Paris Vegas, Plainview, Swift Warrior, Exclusive Strike, and Tetradrachm, another who hates soft ground. Percussion, Praetereo, and Don Dulce were entered for main track only. In the Grade 3, $200,000 Athenia at 1 1/16 miles, Clement entered Ruthenia, who finished fourth as the favorite in this race last year over good ground. “Ruthenia has been training really well. She hates soft turf,” Clement said. “Her only bad race was on the soft turf course at Saratoga. We’ll go day-by-day and see what happens with the weather.” Trainer Chad Brown entered a pair in the Athenia, including the Grade 1 winner Samitar and the Grade 3 winner Pianist. Others entered include Abaco, Assateague, Embarr, and My Perfect Ten. Lady Cohiba, Royal Lahaina, and Moment in Dixie were entered for the main track only. Discreet Marq to Pebbles Expecting better turf conditions by Monday, Clement does plan to run Grade 1 winner Discreet Marq in the $200,000 Pebbles Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, the feature on a Columbus Day card. Discreet Marq had a three-race winning streak snapped when second to Alterite in the Grade 1 Garden City here last month. Clement eschewed shipping Discreet Marq to Kentucky for Saturday’s Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Clement explained that Discreet Marq has already shipped to California this year and he plans on sending back for the Matriarch at Betfair Hollywood Park at the end of November. “I just think it would be slightly abusive to ship her for every single race,” Clement said. Clement said that if he did not like the condition of the turf course on Monday, he could enter Discreet Marq in the Ticonderoga Stakes for New York-breds here on Oct. 19.
