Belmont quarantine ends

A quarantine on Barn 38 at Belmont Park has been lifted after tests conducted on a horse who died in that barn over the weekend did not come back positive for equine herpesvirus, track officials announced Tuesday.

Horses entered for Wednesday's card who were stabled in that barn will be allowed to race.

Smell My Carrots, a 3-year-old New York-bred maiden, was euthanized Saturday after developing a fever and being unable to stand in his stall. The horse was trained by John Candlin, who shares Barn 38 with fellow trainers Mitch Friedman, David Henriques, Mike Miceli, Assaf Ronan, Michael Vaccaro, and Robert Young.

Before the test results came back on Smell My Carrots, New York Racing Association officials placed a quarantine on that barn, and horses stabled there had to train on the Belmont training track after normal training hours were completed.
