Belmont Park: Ruler On Ice’s upset sets up $1.13 million pick-six carryover

ELMONT, N.Y. – The longshot victory by Ruler On Ice in the sloppy Belmont Stakes on Saturday night triggered a pick-six carryover of more than $1.13 million for the next day of live racing at Belmont, scheduled for Wednesday.

The carryover is the third in a row at Belmont. Going into the Saturday card, the carryover from two previous racing days in which bettors were unable to correctly select six winners was $144,003. Saturday’s pool was guaranteed for $1 million.

Bettors who selected five of six winners in the Saturday sequence were rewarded with $20,531 for each correct ticket.

Ruler On Ice paid $51.50 to win, $26 to place, and $13.60 to show. Second-place finisher Stay Thirsty, who was 16-1, paid $19.40 to place and $10.80 to show. Third-place finisher Brilliant Speed, who was 11-1, paid $7.90 to show.

Ruler On Ice’s 24-1 win and the relatively long prices of the second- and third-place finishers also propped up prices in all the exotic pools. The $2 exacta paid $928. The $2 trifecta paid $8,268. The $2 superfecta, including fourth-place finisher Nehro, paid $74,052.

The daily double linking Mission Approved, the 21-1 winner of the Manhattan, and the Belmont paid $1,988. The pick three linking those two races, plus the 12-1 winner of the Just a Game Stakes – C. S. Silk – paid $21,005. The pick four, including Justin Phillip, the 4-1 winner of the Woody Stephens, paid $142,097.

The daily double linking Friday’s Brooklyn Stakes and the Belmont paid $434. Birdrun won the Brooklyn at 7-2.

Attendance on a day with intermittent rain, overcast skies, and temperatures in the low 70's was 55,779, according to the track, the highest since 2008, when a Triple Crown was on the line. Last year's Belmont, which did not feature either the Derby or Preakness winner, attracted 45,243. In 2009, 52,186 were in attendance.
