Throw in an uncertain race flow and you have a race that will likely come down to jockey tactics, making a spread seem like a wise move (6). Race 7: VICTIM OF LOVE settled for the place despite the class drop last time out but a slow start cost her; improvement expected. HONOR WAY was a close-up third at 9-5 in her first start of 2021 but that was a solid effort, as she was forced to try to close into a slow pace. FRENCH EMPIRE has won four straight and her Beyers have increased with each victory (3). Race 8: Have to take a stand somewhere, and this may be the right spot to try to get some separation with firster COLOMBE D' ORO, who has an outstanding work tab for trainer Shug McGaughey. It's tough to get a line on this field given all the firsters in the field but it does seem like an average group, with none of the experienced runners posting a Beyer above the par for this class level (79), with the exception of PALAMOS, who enjoyed a perfect trip in his latest and now returns from a layoff (1). Race 9: Interested to see how the pace scenario plays out in the Peter Pan, a race clearly short on early speed. Perhaps NOVA RAGS can steal it from his inside post, coming off a Florida Derby try where he dueled for the early lead before tiring late. PROMISE KEEPER and WOLFIE'S DYNAGHOST have the speed to stay close, and that makes them dangerous. Morning-line favorite RISK TAKING will be scratched from this race and instead run in next Saturday's Preakness (3). Race 10: The Man o' War is clearly devoid of pace, which could well give SOVEREIGN an edge in his first start in the U.S. He showed speed in his races in Europe and now gets the rail and Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz Jr., who figures to be aggressive with this 5-year-old given the expected race flow (1). Race 11: MISS BONNIE T is easy to like off the near-miss in her return, and in her last start of 2020; inside draw and tactical speed add to the appeal. RASTAFARA also lost a photo in her last start, which was also her debut, and she's clearly one to use in her first local try. THIRD DRAFT is another who was on the wrong side of the photo in her latest, but she obviously ran well in defeat and looms the main late threat off that effort and Beyer (3).
