ANALYSIS

Thought interesting betting races were hard to come by on this card, but this may be a good one to get involved in. DEFIANT (#1, 2/1) feels like the kind of favorite to play against, as his four turf races to date are only okay, but he figures to be bet again, just because. He’s dropping again, and will win a race like this one of these days, but to me is a good horse to bet against every time until he does.Â

The horse I’ll try to beat him with is BOARDWALK BARON (#3, 6/1). He just may not be very good, but he’s also dropping again, and he did not get a great trip last time, despite earning the short comment “2wide trip, no response.” Here are my notes for Boardwalk Baron’s trip, via Formulator:

Down on rail behind winner off pace, caught behind him stretch unable to get clear & had to steady, no fair chance

If he’s around that ML price come post time, I’ll take my chances that he can improve with a clean trip.Â

SPOT PLAYS

Lion Keen (#4, 27-2) starts for a winning barn and seems likely to improve, having gained experience in his debut; also drops into a maiden claimer. – Byron King

VULNERABLE FAVORITE

Defiant (#1, 2-1) has faced better and looks fastest on his best day, but has already lost three times as the chalk in his five-race career. – Byron King

LIVE LONG SHOT

THEROS (#3, 5-1): This Darley Stable homebred got a race under his belt under identical conditions opening weekend; he figures to improve for a strong second-out barn, perhaps getting the jump on morning-line choice Social Affair, who turns back from 1 1/16 miles to seven furlongs. -Dave Litfin

Race 9

SPOT PLAYS

KISS OF THUNDER (#5, 4-1) has a bit of speed and should be well positioned here as a result, as there's not a whole lot of pace in this field; this figures to be a much different race flow for him. -Kenny Peck
