Race 8

Poker Stakes by Randy Goulding

ZA APPROVAL is clearly the class of the field and we’re willing to toss his race in the Grade 1 Makers Mile because he had an odd trip. He found himself on the lead and then after Leparoux tried to ease him off the pace, where he really wants to be, he got shuffled back to last. He’ll appreciate the easier company after tackling Wise Dan in two of his last three starts and he’s reunited with Rosario who was aboard for his win in the Knickerbocker and his second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Toss his latest and he stands out.

JACK MILTON tuned up for this with a sharp win at Churchill Downs and could take a big step forward in his second start back following a five-month layoff. The only time he finished worse than third was in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby where he may have moved too soon and it’s possible he didn’t care for the firmer going. He does his best running late and there should be an honest pace to set him up.

PEACE AND JUSTICE has been installed as the 2-1 second choice but we’re going to take a stand against him. He’s obviously fast, and he posted decent Beyer Speed Figures at Santa Anita, but he’s a bit light in the class department. Plus, PLAINVIEW should be able to put pressure on him right from the start. With plenty of speed in the field ZA APPROVAL should get the kind of trip he wants and if he runs his usual race he is going to be tough to beat. He’s a single in any multiple race wagers and we’ll play him with JACK MILTON in the exacta.
