Belmont: Broadway’s Alibi will skip Acorn

Broadway’s Alibi, a game runner-up to Believe You Can in the Kentucky Oaks on May 4, will not run in next Monday’s Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont, trainer Todd Pletcher said Monday morning.

On Monday, Broadway’s Alibi worked four furlongs in 49.50 seconds over a fast Belmont training track, a move that Pletcher termed just “okay.”

“She’s normally a really good work horse. I think she just needs a little more time after the Oaks,” Pletcher said. “She ran her heart out in there, put a lot into it at a mile and an eighth. It looked like maybe 24 days is a little bit quick.”

Pletcher said that he may now look to run Broadway’s Alibi in the Grade 1 Mother Goose here on June 23, calling it “significant’ that the one-turn race has been shortened from 1 1/8 miles to 1 1/16 miles.

Meanwhile, Pletcher said that In Lingerie is doing well after her victory in the Black-Eyed Susan, despite suffering a cut to her right front leg that was oozing blood afterward.

In Lingerie stumbled at the break and either grabbed herself or was nicked by the horse to her outside.

“It’s one of those things because of the amount of blood that was coming out it looked bad until you got it cleaned up and saw it was just a very minor cut,” said Pletcher, who estimated the cut to be about one-eighth of an inch.

Pletcher said the Mother Goose is a possibility for In Lingerie, but the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga on July 21 could be more likely.

“You keep her two turns maybe with a little more space here than you could have two races at Saratoga,” said Pletcher, acknowledging the Alabama on Aug. 18 as the second of those races.

Pletcher was undecided on where next to start Disposablepleasure, who overcame some traffic issues to finish second in the Black-Eyed Susan.

“She finished with interest,” Pletcher said. “It was nice to see her run back to one of her better races.”

Pletcher also must decide what to do next with his budding turf star, Hudson Steele, who was a visually impressive 2 1/2-length winner of Saturday’s Grade 2 Dixie Stakes at Pimlico. He has now won four of his last five races.

Pletcher said the Grade 1, $500,000 Manhattan on June 9 or the Grade 2, $200,000 Monmouth Stakes on June 10 are possible if he decides to run Hudson Steele back in three weeks for a second time.
