Bellstreet Bridie wins Red Carpet Handicap in first U.S. start

The Grade 3 Red Carpet Handicap for fillies and mares at Del Mar on Thursday was a race of firsts for Bellstreet Bridie.
A recent arrival from Britain, Bellstreet Bridie had her American debut and first start in a stakes in the $151,500 Red Carpet Handicap, and won by a convincing 4 1/4 lengths under jockey Flavien Prat.
The third choice in a field of eight, Bellstreet Bridie stalked pacesetter Dramatizer for the first mile, took the lead approaching the turn and pulled clear in early stretch.
Bellstreet Bridie ($10) ran 1 3/8 miles on turf in 2:15.67 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 95.

Quattroelle (3-1) closed from third to finish second, giving owners Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal a sweep of the exacta, which paid $18.50 for $1.
Bellstreet Bridie is trained by Mark Glatt, while Jeff Mullins trains Quattroelle.
Queen of the Temple (15-1) finished third, followed by Sister Otoole, the 9-5 favorite. Sister Otoole raced at the back of the first for the first seven furlongs, moved closer with a wide move on the backstretch and turn, but was not a threat through the stretch.
Scarabea, Duvet Day, Lady Jae and Dramatizer completed the order of finish.
Bellstreet Bridie arrived in California earlier this month after being purchased for approximately $311,000 at a horses-in-training sale in October. A 3-year-old filly by the Mark of Esteem stallion Sir Percy, Bellstreet Bridie might start in the Grade 1 American Oaks at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita on Dec. 26.
In Britain, Bellstreet Bridie won 3 of 12 starts in 2021 and earlier this year. Trained by Michael Bell, Bellstreet Bridie won three consecutive starts in marathon races at Southwell and Yarmouth in August and September. She was third in a $55,800 handicap at 1 1/4 miles at Newmarket on Oct. 1 in her final start in that country and her richest race prior to the Red Carpet.
