LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bell’s the One notched her sixth career stakes win, and her first since the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff last September, when the stretch-running mare edged away from favored Sconsin to win the 11th running of the Roxelana, a $109,300 overnight stakes held on the penultimate Saturday of the Churchill Downs spring meet. Ridden by Corey Lanerie, Bell’s the One found herself closer to the early pace than normal, but she still had her familiar kick when finishing the 6 1/2-furlong race in 1:14.90 over fast going. Sconsin, the 13-10 favorite in a field of six fillies and mares, was three-quarters of a length behind the winner and another 1 3/4 lengths before longshot Miss Mosaic. “I let her run a little bit out of there and found myself really close,” Lanerie said. “I let them get away from me where I could ease to the outside and be able to make my run.” :: DRF Bets players get free Daily Racing Form Past Performances and up to 5% weekly cashback. Bell’s the One, trained by Neil Pessin for Lothenbach Stables, returned $6.20 as third choice. The 5-year-old Majesticperfection mare now has won eight of 18 overall starts and has earned $1,016,825, with the Derby City Distaff on the 2020 Kentucky Derby undercard remaining her career highlight. “This looked like a Grade 2 race,” Pessin said. “I told Corey to tip her outside when you turn for home and she’ll run her best race, and that’s what happened.” Pessin said Bell’s the One could have one start before the Thoroughbred Club of America in October at Keeneland, a Win and You’re In toward the trainer’s ultimate goal, the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar. Bell’s the One was third and Sconsin was fourth in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint last fall at Keeneland. The $2 exacta (4-5) paid $12.20, the $1 trifecta (4-5-2) returned $26.30, and the 10-cent superfecta (4-5-2-3) was worth $3.45. The 38-day meet ends next Saturday with seven stakes, highlighted by a pair of Grade 2 “Win and You’re In” races toward the Breeders’ Cup, the Stephen Foster and Fleur de Lis. Ellis Park in western Kentucky starts its summer meet the following day, June 27.
