Bejarano will ride Bolo in Kentucky Derby

The first fallout from the injury to One Lucky Dane occurred Sunday, when Keith Brackpool, a co-owner of Bolo, announced via Twitter that Rafael Bejarano would ride Bolo in the Kentucky Derby on May 2, the first of several jockey assignments that are expected to be made in the next 48 hours.
Bejarano would have ridden One Lucky Dane in the Derby, but One Lucky Dane suffered a condylar fracture to his left front ankle during a workout Saturday at Santa Anita and is off the Derby trail.

Mike Smith has been riding Bolo, but he is in play for two other spots. Smith and Javier Castellano are the main candidates to replace John Velazquez on whomever Velazquez doesn’t choose between Carpe Diem and Materiality. Smith also could ride Far Right. Once Velazquez makes his decision – and that should come within the next 48 hours – many dominoes will start to fall, including that of Tencendur, who needs a new rider with Jose Ortiz committed to Upstart.
On Sunday afternoon, El Kabeir picked up three-time Derby winner Calvin Borel. Earlier Sunday morning, El Kabeir worked five furlongs in 1:00.15 at Belmont Park, where he will have his final Derby workout next weekend before heading to Kentucky. He was ridden in his recent starts by C.C. Lopez, but the mount was shopped to various other jockeys in the fortnight since that race.
