Beholder begins training towards 2015 season

Steve Andersen|Dec 20, 2014
Beholder
Shigeki Kikkawa Two-time champion Beholder was declared from the BC Distaff last Sunday when she spiked a 104-degree temperature and was treated with penicillin, which cannot appear in post-race tests.

Beholder, the two-time champion who missed the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Oct. 31 because of illness, has resumed training for a 2015 season.

Owned by B. Wayne Hughes, Beholder was briefly at trainer Richard Mandella’s stable at Santa Anita on Friday and early Saturday, long enough to undergo precautionary X-rays on her lungs. Mandella said on Saturday that the X-rays were “perfect.”

Saturday morning, Beholder was sent to Julie Adair-Stack’s farm in Chino, Calif., where she will undergo preliminary training for a few weeks before rejoining Mandella’s stable at Santa Anita.

A 4-year-old, Beholder was the champion 2-year-old filly of 2012 and champion 3-year-old filly of 2013. She has won 10 of 15 starts and earned $3,368,300.

The Mandella-trained Moulin de Mougin, who won the Grade 2 John Mabee Stakes at Del Mar in August, is also at Adair-Stack’s farm, preparing for a 2015 comeback.

Moulin de Mougin has not raced since she fell after clipping heels in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 27. Mandella considered the 4-year-old filly for the BC Filly and Mare Turf but opted not to race her in the autumn.

Owned by Ran-Jan Racing, Moulin de Mougin has won 4 of 14 starts and earned $313,160.

Bal a Bali recovers from laminitis

Earlier this year, Mandella hoped to run the South American import Bal a Bali in the BC Turf, a plan that was abandoned when the 4-year-old colt was diagnosed with laminitis after being sent to North America.

Mandella said earlier this week that Bal a Bali has recovered and is expected to join his stable in coming weeks. Bal a Bali, a prospect for turf marathons later this year, has spent recent months at a farm in Kentucky, Mandella said.

Bal a Bali has won 10 of 11 starts, including his last seven starts since September 2013. He won the Grande Premio Brasil on June 8, and won the Rio Triple Crown earlier this year for trainer Dulcino Guignoni and Stud Alvarenga.
