Beer: How I'll play Saratoga for Sunday, July 30
On a Sunday card that begins with a three-horse field in the Grade 3 Shuvee, I found the multi-race sequences mostly uninteresting. Rather than try to cobble a play together, let's focus on a couple of interesting spots on the card.
Race 4: #9 Heldatgunpoint was seen here just four days ago in an entry-level allowance over course and distance. He finished fourth, but only after losing position in the race while caught behind horses through the turn. He has improved since he switched to turf, as his pedigree suggested he would, and he can rebound in this race at a price.

Race 5: #2 Party Club is is one of only three runners in the field with a prior race under her belt, which can be a big advantage in these maiden sprints for 2-year-olds. She was forced into a wide trip in that career debut after getting away at the back of the field, and she finished well in that race to gain late ground on the leaders.
Race 9: #10 J. S. Choice is a 3-year-old taking on a field of hard-hitting older horses, but he was a fairly promising turf horse last year, before failing to work out a trip in the Breeders' Cup, and he ran quite well when returned from the layoff while making a wide run to contention in a strong field for the level.
Race 10: #5 Speedy Slew's improved effort last time came with a drop in class over a wet track. But it was also his first start as a 3-year-old and first start back from a layoff, and it's worth pointing out that he appeared to be on his way to victory once coming clear in his most recent start sprinting on turf, only to have his rider lose his irons.
