Beer: Belmont Park late pick four for Saturday, Sept. 17
Race 7: The J Y (#4) has run better than it may appear in his last two starts, as he had some trouble getting a clear run in the stretch two back before coming with a game finish, and then ripped off a fast pace to set up the race for closers last time. He drops in class for this and can break through if able to finally pull the right trip. I will also use the logical Lead by Example (#8), who was an easy winner two back before catching plenty of stretch traffic last time, and Mr Harlan (#3), a closer who just missed with a late run in his first start for Linda Rice at Saratoga.
Race 8: Tricky race for the pick four. Jet Black (#2) will appreciate the drop in class and step back in trip and looks like the horse to beat, but I also want to use Testosterstone (#1), West Hills Giant (#8), and Get Jets (#9), who displayed plenty of talent last year but has obviously encountered some issues as a 3-year-old.
Race 9: The Grade 2 Sands Point is an excellent race, but I am mostly going to live and die with Diamond Fields (#2), who finished an excellent third behind the top two 3-year-old turf fillies in the country in last month’s Lake Placid. The likeable Tin Type Gal (#4) and Shug McGaughey’s up-and-coming On Leave (#5) are backups.
Race 10: Light the Vow (#8) is an interesting horse trying turf for the first time in the finale. He is bred to handle the switch, and his last was an improved effort with a less-than-ideal trip in his first route attempt and first race with Lasix. I will use him in equal weight with the logical Bushmill Giant (#7) and the returning Captain Kitt (#9), who ran a pair of solid races on turf last year but hasn’t been seen in 490 days.
