Beach Patrol, Fanciful Angel among 11 Breeders' Cup workers for Brown

ELMONT, N.Y. – Beware “the other horse” in Breeders’ Cup races where trainer Chad Brown will have multiple starters.

In the 34th running of the Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 3-4 at Del Mar, Brown is likely to have more than one starter in four Breeders’ Cup races: three in the Filly and Mare Turf, two in the Turf, two in the Filly and Mare Sprint, and two in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. In some cases, there will be a distinct difference in price between his starters. But don’t be surprised if the longer-priced runner outperforms the one fancied more by the bettors.

One example is the Breeders’ Cup Turf, where Brown will send out both Beach Patrol and Fanciful Angel, the 1-2 finishers from the Arlington Million and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. Beach Patrol likely will be a shorter price, but Fanciful Angel is starting to impress Brown.

On Saturday, Fanciful Angel and Beach Patrol worked five furlongs together in 1:02.59 over the Belmont Park turf course. The two were basically head-and-head through splits of 13.14, 25.99, and 38.88, but Fanciful Angel was slightly better on the gallop-out. Fanciful Angel is a bit headstrong in his works, but Brown has seen significant improvement in the gelding on a weekly basis.

“I see a horse that every week is getting bigger, stronger,” Brown said. “I see the improvement I’m looking for.”

In discussing Fanciful Angel’s headstrong tendencies, Brown said, “That’s him. He has a little bit of a high head carriage. He tugs a lot through the lane. He’s not unmanageable. In fact, I think he’s improving. He was perched outside of Beach Patrol, and he actually galloped out ahead of him a little bit. Not by design, but that’s how much run the horse had left in him once we let him have his head a touch on the gallop-out.”

Beach Patrol and Fanciful Angel were among the 11 Breeders’ Cup horses Brown worked on a gorgeous fall morning in New York.

In the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Brown will send out Rushing Fall and Significant Form. Rushing Fall might be the favorite based on her 3 1/2-length victory in the Grade 3 Jessamine at Keeneland. But Significant Form, the winner of the Miss Grillo here on Oct. 1, put in a very strong five-furlong work in 59.64 seconds in company with Rymska. The pair got their final three furlongs in 34.97.

Brown said the pair “went a little quick, but well in hand. I thought Significant Form did terrific.”

Brown has won the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf three times, all with horses who had won the Miss Grillo.

“This race here has been the path to victory in the Breeders’ Cup,” Brown said in his Belmont office.

Brown’s pair of Paulassilverlining and Carina Mia both worked Saturday for the Filly and Mare Sprint. Paulassilverlining went five furlongs in 1:01.19 in company with Jamyson n Ginger, but the pair got the final quarter in 23.75 seconds and galloped out in 1:14.42.

Paulassilverlining, a two-time Grade 1 winner this year, will be attempting to bounce back from a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga on Aug. 26.

“Time’s done her well. She’s training really well fresh,” Brown said. “I’m liking this approach, taking her into the race this way. It’s going to be a very tough race, we know that, but we know that she’s top class.”

Carina Mia, working by herself, went a half-mile in 48.84 seconds, with a final quarter in 23.78.

Carina Mia had a quarter crack that forced to her miss some training for the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom, in which she was beaten only a neck by Highway Star.

“I thought she’d be fine at 80 percent to handle that field. As it turned out, she couldn’t,” Brown said. “She’s much better now that the quarter crack’s grown down; her training has gone smoothly, with no interruptions.”

Brown’s trio for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf breezed on Saturday. Lady Eli, the potential race favorite, worked five furlongs in 1:00.14 in company with Elysea’s World. The pair got their final quarter in 23.30 seconds.

Grand Jete went a half-mile in 48.97 seconds in company with Roca Rojo. It was Grand Jete’s first work since her third-place finish in the Flower Bowl.

Dacita worked a half-mile on dirt in 50.20 seconds in company with Off Limits. Brown called Dacita’s work “fair” and said he will continue to evaluate her leading up to next Sunday’s shipping date.

Practical Joke worked five furlongs in 1:02.06 in company with the unraced 4-year-old Business Cycle. Practical Joke was tested but was well in hand in the breeze. Brown is still considering pre-entering him in both the Sprint and the Dirt Mile. With the races on different days, Brown could enter Practical Joke in both races provided he doesn’t keep a horse out of the body of either race. Both races are limited to 14 starters.

Good Magic, second in the Grade 1 Champagne, worked a half-mile in 50.91 seconds in company with Allured. Good Magic is pointing to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, where he will be ridden by Jose Ortiz.

Voting Control, preparing for the Juvenile Turf, worked a half-mile in 50.36 seconds in company with Bricks and Mortar, who is training up to the Hollywood Derby in late November.

Brown’s other two Breeders’ Cup starters based at Belmont, Annals of Time (Mile) and Separationofpowers (Juvenile Fillies) are scheduled to breeze Sunday. Rushing Fall (Juvenile Fillies Turf) is based at Keeneland.

Brown’s Belmont contingent is all expected to work back next Saturday before shipping to Southern California on Sunday.
