BC Juvenile Fillies Turf: Eurton hopes Flattery can deliver a surprise

ARCADIA, Calif. - The filly will be ridden by the local leading jockey. She is a stakes winner and has a race over the course.
Those elements give trainer Peter Eurton hope that Flattery can produce a surprise performance in Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile at Santa Anita against a tough field of international fillies and runners from other parts of the country.
“There are a lot of Europeans that haven’t been on this turf,” Eurton said. “It’s different for the Eastern horses. Hopefully, that gives us a little bit of an edge.”
Owned by Exline-Border Racing, Burns Racing, Aaron Kennedy and Richard Hausman, Flattery has won 2 of 3 starts, including the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 9. She will be a longshot in the Juvenile Fillies Turf after a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 8.
Eurton lamented that Flattery chased a slow pace in the Surfer Girl, finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind the undefeated Dreamfyre, a California-based filly who is part of the Juvenile Fillies Turf field. Dreamfyre is expected to be part of the pace.
Flattery will be ridden by Juan Hernandez, who through Saturday led all riders at the current Santa Anita autumn meeting with 19 wins.
Flattery races from off the pace, but whether that style equates to a top-three finish will depend on whether Hernandez can guide her through a big field against foreign runners such as Carla’s Way and Les Pavots and domestic contenders such as Austere, Buchu and She Feels Pretty, to name a few.
“It’s hard to say where she settles in,” Eurton said. “Hopefully, there will be a good pace and she’ll have something to run at.”
“If she runs her race, she has a good chance to be placed. It’s all about the trip on turf. They’re all young and immature.”
