Bayern to stand at Hill ‘n’ Dale next year

Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern will be retired at the end of this season to join the stallion roster at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Lexington, Ky., the farm’s John Sikura announced Friday night.

The 4-year-old son of Offlee Wild remains in training with Bob Baffert and is pointing for the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes on Sept. 26 at Santa Anita.

Bayern won four graded stakes in 2014, including Grade 1 triumphs in the Haskell Invitational and Pennsylvania Derby by open lengths. He then just held off Toast of New York and California Chrome in a controversial edition of the Breeders' Cup Classic, in which he came in at the start.

Bayern is winless in four starts since the Classic, most recently finishing ninth in the Pacific Classic. His career record stands at 6 wins from 14 starts for earnings of more than $4.4 million.

Bayern’s stud fee and other details will be announced at a later date. The colt marks the second major acquisition for Hill 'n' Dale recently, as two-time Horse of the Year Curlin relocated to the operation last week after it purchased a minority interest in him.
