Bayern retired after third-place finish in Awesome Again

Barbara D. Livingston Bayern (right), winning the Breeders' Cup Classic over Toast of New York and California Chrome, would be tough to catch if he goes in the Charles Town Classic next year.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Bayern, winner of the 2014 Breeders' Cup Classic, was announced as retired Saturday night by owner Kaleem Shah. He had finished third Saturday afternoon as the favorite in the Awesome Again, which marked his fifth straight loss since the BC Classic.
"Bayern has given my family memories of a lifetime, and I am grateful for that," said Shah.
Bayern won 6 of 10 starts at age 3, including the Haskell and the Woody Stephens prior to the BC Classic. He was one of the finalists last year for Eclipse Awards as both Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male.
Bayern, by Offlee Wild, goes to stud beginning next spring at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Kentucky. An official announcement is expected from Hill 'n' Dale in the next few days.
