Bayern, Majestic Harbor work for BC Classic, as California Chrome arrives at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. – The speedy Bayern and the steady Majestic Harbor both turned in their final works Sunday at Santa Anita for next Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic on a day that saw Cigar Street and Zivo work at Belmont Park and California Chrome arrive at Santa Anita following an early-morning van ride from Los Alamitos.
Bayern is the likely pacesetter in the Classic, and he flashed his speed with jockey Martin Garcia aboard, traveling six furlongs in 1:11.64, according to Daily Racing Form. He sat off a workmate and finished sharply in the lane.
“He went nice, cruising around there,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “He’s been ready for a couple of weeks now.”
Majestic Harbor was the first horse on the track after the second of three renovation breaks, during a brief window that is reserved for Breeders’ Cup horses to train. Baffert got on his radio and told his two riders, including Garcia, to wait while Majestic Harbor broke off so they didn’t interfere with one another’s work.
“That was very nice of Bob,” said Sean McCarthy, the trainer of Majestic Harbor, whose wife, Kim, works for Baffert.

Majestic Harbor, working by himself, went a half-mile in 48.76 seconds with jockey Tyler Baze. He essentially clicked off successive furlongs in 12.20 seconds like a metronome.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with how he’s doing,” McCarthy said. “It’s been like clockwork so far.”
Also at Santa Anita, just before dawn, California Chrome arrived by van from Los Alamitos, which is 32 miles away. He worked Saturday and had no training scheduled for Sunday, making it the ideal day to ship. He is in the same stall out of which he ran his races earlier this year at Santa Anita, including when he won the Santa Anita Derby.
In addition, V. E. Day jogged after arriving Saturday from New York, and Toast of New York safely arrived from Britain.
At Belmont Park, Cigar Street, under exercise rider Juan Quinteros, worked four furlongs in 47.96 seconds over the main track, going his opening quarter in 24 and his final quarter in 23.96. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.45 and six furlongs in 1:14.02.
“He’s never been one that’s going to work in 46, but if he can go a mile and a quarter in 12, 12, 12, 12, he’ll go in two minutes, won’t he?” trainer Bill Mott said.
Zivo, with jockey Jose Lezcano up, went five furlongs in 1:00.95, finishing a neck in front of the 2-year-old maiden Dispersion, with whom he worked. Zivo went in splits of 12.55, 24.56, and 36.43. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.86.
“Zivo worked excellent, Lezcano said he had plenty of horse, and he galloped out extremely well,” trainer Chad Brown said. “I was thrilled. I wanted 1:01, he went [1:00.95], and he did it against the bit the whole way.”
Entries will be taken and posts drawn Monday for the Classic and the other 12 Breeders’ Cup races to be run Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita.
