Bayern colt runs fastest furlong at OBS breeze show
A colt by Bayern finished with the fastest furlong at the pre-sale under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale of 2-year-olds in training, the season kickoff in North America.
The OBS breeze show had been scheduled to run over three sessions, Thursday through Saturday, on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface. OBS reported no trouble with its facility following a severe storm, including a tornado that touched down in Ocala on Saturday morning. However, rain and high winds pushed the Saturday session to Sunday. As a result, the start time for the opening session of the sale has been pushed back to 1 p.m. Tuesday, in order to allow more time for buyer inspections. The second and final session of the sale will begin as scheduled, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The Bayern colt worked his bullet furlong, the traditional measuring stick for 2-year-old auctions, during Thursday's opening session, going in 9 3/5 seconds. The Florida-bred colt, a January foal, is consigned by Really and Truly Thoroughbreds, as agent. He is out of the unraced Pioneerof the Nile mare Sophia Mia; graded stakes-placed Amie’s Dini and Kid Kate appear on the catalog page.
Behind the Bayern colt came a logjam of 25 juveniles who worked in 9 4/5 seconds, including a colt by Triple Crown winner Justify and a filly by commercial sensation City of Light, who head up this year's freshman class.
A Florida-bred filly by prominent state sire Adios Charlie turned in the fastest quarter-mile of the show, going in 20 2/5 seconds during Friday's session. A relatively small number of juveniles – 40 from the catalog of 635 – worked that longer distance for this early-season sale.
The Adios Charlie filly, consigned by Ocala Stud, as agent, is out of Grade 2-placed multiple stakes winner Travelator. The A.P. Jet mare is the dam of eight winners from as many starters, including stakes-placed Sweetheart Deal and Fantasy Forest, dam of graded stakes winner Last Judgment.
