Bay Meadows: Lexicon all the way

Dale Omenson|Sep 10, 2001

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Lexicon ($6), ridden by Russell Baze, used a pace advantage to upset 1-5 favorite Swept Overboard and win the $150,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint by three-quarters of a length.

Lexicon broke like a shot and quickly opened up by a length, with the other three entrants racing as a team. After a quarter in a slow 22.75 seconds, Lexicon opened a lead of nearly three lengths en route to a 44.59 half.

Swept Overboard, ridden by Corey Nakatani, took off after Lexicon on the turn. He got to within about a neck in deep stretch, but could make no further headway. Lexicon inched away at the end and ran the six furlongs in a blazing 1:07.94
