Barretts’ mixed sale on Tuesday kicks off California auction calendar

The Barretts January mixed sale on Tuesday is the first event in a busy year for the sale company, which will host six sales at three venues in Southern California in 2013.

Tuesday’s sale in Pomona, Calif., features yearlings, 2-year-olds, broodmares, horses of racing age and stallion prospects. The most notable name on the list of stallion prospects is Midnight Interlude, the winner of the 2011 Santa Anita Derby who was 16th in the Kentucky Derby and 13th in the Preakness Stakes.

Tuesday’s sale, which begins at 11 a.m. Pacific, is the only mixed sale of the year conducted by Barretts.

For the first time this year, Barretts is conducting two paddock sales–the paddock sale at Del Mar on July 21, the first Sunday of the track’s popular race meeting, and the winter paddock sale at Santa Anita on Dec 28, during opening week of the track’s winter-spring meeting.

Barretts has two juvenile sales in 2013–the select March sale on March 4 and the May sale on May 13. The company hosts one yearling auction, the October yearling sale on Oct. 8.

The strength of the 2012 yearling sale, which had an average price of $23,026—a gain of 36 percent over 2011—has led Barretts vice-president Bill Baker to expect “a solid sale on Tuesday.”

“We do have some quality offerings among horses that will demand a wide range of bids,” Baker said in an email. “The demand for breeding stock in California should be stronger based on the strength of our most recent October yearling sale.”

The 2012 January mixed sale posted an average of $6,065, with 162 horses selling for $982,500. There were 81 horses listed as not sold. Horses of racing age was the strongest category, with 38 selling for an average of $7,039.

The sale topper was Sci Fi Kin, a broodmare who sold for $60,000 in foal to leading California stallion Unusual Heat. Sci Fi Kin was the only hip that sold for more than $50,000, according to Barretts.

This year’s sale includes a yearling filly by Unusual Heat, consigned by Harris Farms, agent. The filly is out of the 9-year-old mare Rockella, who is by Tribal Rule and was a stakes winner of $225,916. The yearling filly is Hip No. 8; Rockella sells as Hip No. 9.

Shalini, a 14-year-old multiple stakes winner who earned $393,530, sells in foal to Giacomo as Hip No. 17. Shalini has produced the California-bred stakes-placed filly Whispering Hush.

The list of stallion prospects includes 7-year-old Triumphant Flight, who won three of 10 starts and $268,883. By Chullo, Triumphant Flight won the 2008 Barretts Juvenile at Fairplex Park and 2009 San Miguel Stakes at Santa Anita. His first foals are yearlings this year.

Triumphant Flight is consigned by Andy Havens Bloodstock, agent for Tyler Seltzer, who is dispersing his breeding stock. Other horses included in the Seltzer dispersal are four broodmares and four yearlings.

The 2-year-olds include Gold Magic, a Stormin Fever half-sister to 2012 stakes winner Derby Gold; a filly by Tribal Rule who is a half-sister to the stakes-placed runners Snapshot and Cajun Gent; and a filly who is a full sister to Monument, the winner of the 2012 California Cup Juvenile.
