Joe Nevills|Dec 17, 2012

The West Coast portion of the 2013 auction calendar kicks off on Jan. 22 with the Barretts Equine Ltd. January mixed sale. The one-day sale will begin at 11 a.m. Pacific at the Hinds Pavilion on the grounds of Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif.

This year’s catalog features a total of 318 broodmares, yearlings, 2-year-olds, and racing prospects, down 8 percent from the number cataloged in the 2012 sale. However, supplemental entries will be accepted until Jan. 7.

The yearlings and 2-year-olds scheduled to go through the ring are by such sires as Awesome Gambler, Benchmark, Bertrando, Bushwacker, Desert Code, Dixie Chatter, Flashy Bull, Idiot Proof, Kafwain, Kodiak Kowboy, Lucky J. H., Lucky Pulpit, Marino Marini, Old Fashioned, Papa Clem, Parading, Pioneerof the Nile, Pomeroy, Ready’s Image, Salt Lake, Square Eddie, Stormin Fever, Storm Wolf, Surf Cat, Swiss Yodeler, Tiz Wonderful, Tribal Rule, Unusual Heat, and With Distinction.

The 2012 Barretts January sale was a significantly downsized renewal compared to 2011, but the average saw improvement. Total revenues from the 162 horses sold were down 28 percent to $982,500. The average sale price of $6,064 was a 14 percent increase, while the median price rose 20 percent to $3,000.

The top price of the 2012 sale was $60,000 paid for Sci Fi Kin, a 13-year-old Siphon mare, sold in foal to leading California sire Unusual Heat and purchased by Ron Stolich. Stolich was the second-leading buyer of the sale behind Gary Danielson, who bought three horses for a total of $67,000. The leading consignor was Havens Bloodstock Agency, which sold 46 horses for a total of $231,100.

Recent alumni of the Barretts January sale include champion sprinter Amazombie, Grade 1 winner Willa B Awesome, Grade 2 winner Frumious, and Grade 3 winner Izzy Rules.
