Barrera-Sanchez team has numbers in Texas Quarter Horse Association Sale Futurity
The team of owner Ricardo Barrera and trainer Rodolfo Sanchez has the competition surrounded Saturday night in the $443,050 Texas Quarter Horse Association Sale Futurity at Retama Park near San Antonio. The men have three starters in the 10-horse race, which will share a card with the $175,700 Retama Park Derby.
Barrera and Sanchez will send out fastest qualifier One Sweet Picky, second-fastest qualifier Courageous Flight, and dominant trial winner Like a Denali. The TQHA Sale Futurity, which will be run over 350 yards, is the highlight of the meet at Retama.
One Sweet Picky rallied from eighth for a 1 1/4-length win in her trial July 15 at Retama. She covered 350 yards in 17.94 seconds. Ivan Carnero has the mount on the filly, who drew well in post 10.
Courageous Flight made his career debut during the July 15 trials and led throughout for a 1 1/2-length win in 18.00 seconds. He will break from post 6 under Ignacio Bustamante.
Like a Denali rallied from off the pace in his July 15 trial for a 1 3/4-length win. He covered the distance in 18.08 seconds. The start was Like a Denali’s first on Lasix. He will break from post 7 under Isaac Chapa.
The chief threat could be Cartel Flash, who romped by 4 1/4 lengths in her trial, covering the distance in 18.08. Raul Ramirez Jr. has the mount for owner Rosa Aguado and trainer Daniel Luna.
The Retama Park Derby at 400 yards drew major stakes winners Tee Chic and Gyr Jammer, with the latter going for his fourth straight win Saturday when he breaks from post 10.
