Barese pulls away late to win Genesee Valley Breeders' Stakes
?q=100)
Barese, shipping in from the New York Racing Association circuit, drew away from locally based Lady’s Golden Guy in deep stretch to win the $50,000 Genesee Valley Breeders’ Stakes for New York-bred older horses on Monday at Finger Lakes.
This was the fourth career stakes victory for Barese ($2.60), who is trained by Mike Maker for Paradise Farms and David Staudacher. The 4-year-old Laoban colt was favored in a field of five.
Lady's Golden Guy stumbled at the start of the Genesee Valley, but quickly recovered to assume command, leading by a length through the opening half-mile, for which there was not a fractional time available. Beta was second, with Barese, who had been bumped by Sea Foam at the start after that foe ducked in, another length back in third.

Lady's Golden Guy tried to edge away on the turn and hit the stretch having slightly increased his advantage to 1 1/2 lengths. But Barese, who had already dispatched of Beta, came on willingly when asked by rider David Cabrera. He poked a head in front of Lady's Golden Guy in the stretch, then edged clear in the final yards to his winning margin.
The final time was recorded as 1:45.72 for the 1 1/16 miles on the fast track.
After Lady's Golden Guy in second, it was 2 1/4 lengths back to Beta, Brother Jeremiah, and Sea Foam.
