A deep field of fillies and mares was entered Wednesday for the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie, the premier race of the Laurel Park winter meet, which will close out the six-stakes Winter Carnival program Saturday. The undercard includes the Grade 3, $250,000 General George and four $100,000 stakes. Manny Franco, Kendrick Carmouche, and Dylan Davis, the top three jockeys at Aqueduct, are named to ride on the card. Franco has mounts in five of the stakes, and Carmouche will ride in four of them. The seven-furlong Fritchie has 11 entrants, but Bishop’s Pond, Frisky Whiskey, and Sky Flower are cross-entered in the 1 1/16-mile Maryland Racing Media, which has 10 entrants. :: Get bonus PPs for Saturday's Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie card at Laurel Park The horse to beat in the $300,000 Fritchie is Ms Locust Point, who will be shooting for her fourth consecutive victory since returning from a nine-month layoff. Trainer John Servis has been pointing Ms Locust Point to the Fritchie all winter, and she appears to have the best early speed in the lineup. Ms Locust Point, a three-time stakes winner, is 5 for 7 in her career. She will start from post 9 under Jorge Vargas Jr. “She’s getting better and better,” Servis said. “She’s more mature and settles and relaxes better now.” Highway Star, the only graded stakes winner in the field, also will have plenty of supporters. A four-time graded winner, she won the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom, Grade 2 Ruffian, and Grade 3 Distaff in 2017 for trainer Rodrigo Ubillo. She was entered without a rider Wednesday. Angel Arroyo, who has been aboard in 9 of her last 10 starts, is named to ride at Aqueduct on Saturday. Highway Star drew post 11. Highway Star has not raced since finishing second in the Grade 3 Go for Wand on Dec. 2. She has worked five times since Jan. 11. Divine Miss Grey, Berned, Bishop’s Pond, Quezon, and Moiety all come into the Fritchie off wins. Berned’s November victory in the Safely Kept at Laurel was the best effort of her career. Trained by Graham Motion, she cut back to one turn in the seven-furlong stakes following six two-turn races. “It was a little confusing, I’ve thought of her as a two-turn, 1 1/4-mile type but shortening her up to seven furlongs, where she can come from off the pace, appears to be what she wants to do,” Motion said. Following the Safely Kept, Motion thought about sending Berned to the Grade 1 La Brea, a seven-furlong race at Santa Anita. “We considered the race out west in December but then decided to just give her a little rest,” he said. “I wanted her down in Florida, so the weather wouldn’t interfere with her training.” Berned comes into the Fritchie off a three-month break. She has worked six times at Palm Meadows since Dec. 30. Divine Miss Grey was ultra-sharp in the seven-furlong Interborough on Jan. 15 at Aqueduct, pulling away by 3 1/4 lengths. She is vastly improved since being claimed for $16,000 by trainer Danny Gargan last March and has since won 5 of 9 starts. The field is completed by Interborough runner-up Boule, Mahoning Valley Distaff winner Moiety, and Tazkeya, who finished second to Ms Locust Point in the What a Summer Stakes on Jan. 20.
