SHAKOPEE, Minn. – The $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby, Canterbury Park’s annual top prize, will be run Saturday, a weekend later than originally intended. Despite a valiant effort by management, including the offer of a massive purse hike, a surface switch, and a calendar adjustment, the Derby did not lure American Pharoah and instead has its typically solid look. Contested at one mile on the turf course, the Derby attracted seven 3-year-olds. Headed by Barbados and Syntax, the Derby is comprised of six colts and one gelding with little experience over this turf course. Barbados, the most accomplished of the group, won the Grade 3 Hutcheson on Jan. 24 at Gulfstream Park and most recently chased home Holy Boss when third Aug. 1 in the Grade 2 Amsterdam at Saratoga. Trained at Churchill Downs by Michael Tomlinson, Barbados returns to turf racing for the first time this season and races around two turns for the first time. Syntax starts for trainer Bill Mott, who won the 2014 renewal with Long On Value. Syntax won the Grade 3, $200,250 Kent Stakes on July 18 at Delaware Park. Like Barbados, he makes the trek to Shakopee from Churchill Downs. Flashy Jewel, the locally based winner of the Manitoba Derby on Aug. 3, and Nun the Less, a Chicago shipper who was third July 11 in the Grade 3 American Derby at Arlington, fit nicely here, and both are owned by locally based Lothenbach Stables Inc. Among the others, Gallery, who won the $95,000 Manila on July 12 at Belmont over the classy Mott-trained A Lot, is a proven turf miler, whereas Space Mine, a quick and unexposed dirt sprinter, will try to transfer his ability to the inner turf course, similar to what Barbados is attempting. The Mystic Lake Derby, part of an eight-race card that starts at 4:02 p.m. Central, has a scheduled post time of 7:22. :: Bet Canterbury with DRF Bets.
