Papa’s Golden Boy will try to complete the hat trick when he runs in the $50,000 Governor’s on Sunday at Emerald Downs. The 6 1/2-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up drew seven horses and goes as race 6 on an nine-race card that begins at 2:30 p.m. Pacific. The Governor’s shares top billing with the $50,000 Washington State Legislators, which will have nine fillies and mares going 6 1/2 furlongs. The Legislators immediately follows the Governor’s as race 7. Papa’s Golden Boy, trained by Vince Gibson, was not tested in his six-length romp going 5 1/2 furlongs in a conditioned allowance race with a $40,000 claiming option in his first start as a 5-year-old on June 2. Nor was he under any pressure when he took them all the way in the $50,000 Budweiser on June 17. :: Bet the races with confidence on DRF Bets. With Julien Couton aboard, the Washington-bred son of Harbor the Gold broke alertly from the inside post in the six-furlong dash, and after posting moderate – for him – interior fractions of 22.19 seconds and 44.21, he easily held off Baja Sur, who finished second as the 3-5 favorite. Gibson likes the way Papa’s Golden Boy is coming into the Governor’s, but was not pleased that he drew the inside post again. “He’s ready, but I was hoping for an outside post where we could see if he would rate,” Gibson said. “We don’t have much choice but to send him again.” Papa’s Golden Boy rated nicely on the lead in his win in the Budweiser, but with Windribbon in the field on Sunday, he will likely be under pressure right from the start. If all goes well, Papa’s Golden Boy will make his next start in the Grade 3, $100,000 Longacres Mile on Aug. 15. Last year, Papa’s Golden Boy set the pace before finishing fifth in the Mile. “He’s smarter this year, so I think he’ll be able to rate a bit better,” Gibson said. “Unfortunately, we won’t be able to find out more about that in this race.” Couton retains the mount on Papa’s Golden Boy. Baja Sur’s chances in the Budweiser took a big hit when he broke a half-step slowly and was in chase mode the rest of the way. The Blaine Wright-trained 5-year-old can stalk, and he will have some help up front with his stablemate Windribbon in the race. Windribbon is coming off a 6 3/4-length win in a conditioned allowance race with a $40,000 claiming option where he was a length behind after a wicked half-mile in 43.62. A 5-year-old California-bred son of Sway Away, Windribbon was making his first start of the year. He is eligible to improve with a race behind him, and if he breaks alertly figures to put pressure on Papa’s Golden Boy. Windribbon breaks from post 4 with Juan Gutierrez riding. Frank Ceballos retains the mount on Baja Sur, who drew post 6. Washington State Legislators Daffodil Sweet and Ima Happy Cat meet for the second consecutive time in the Washington State Legislators. Ima Happy Cat, ridden by Couton, had things all to herself when heavily favored Daffodil Sweet broke poorly in the $50,000 Hastings on June 17 at Emerald. Trained by Dan Markle, Ima Happy Cat held a 4 1/2-length lead at the half-mile call and was never threatened while winning the six-furlong sprint by 2 1/4 lengths over Squan’s Kingdom, who rallied late. A 6-year-old daughter of Smiling Tiger, Ima Happy Cat went into the race off a 3 1/4-length front-running victory in a $32,000 claimer on April 23 at Golden Gate Fields. It was her fifth win on Tapeta. With three wins at Emerald, she handles dirt just as well. :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures Ima Happy Cat worked a bullet five furlongs in 58 seconds on July 4 and appears to be primed for another strong effort. She will break from post 6 with Couton aboard. Prior to the Hastings, Daffodil Sweet had not lost sprinting, with her only defeat a second to Princess of Cairo in the 1 1/16-mile Washington Oaks. Trained by Chris Stenslie, Daffodil Sweet began this season with an easy front-running win in a conditioned allowance race with a $50,000 claiming option on May 20 at Emerald. It is easy to toss her race in the Hastings, as she wants to be involved early and was eliminated when she hesitated leaving the starting gate. In all six of her races, she was ridden by Juan Gutierrez, and he will be aboard Sunday when she breaks from post 3. The Wright-trained Coco Bee was running on dirt for the first time when she finished fourth in the Hastings. She came back to work a bullet three furlongs on July 4 and could take a big step forward in her second start on dirt with leading rider Alex Cruz riding her for the first time. A 6-year-old daughter of Richard’s Kid, Coco Bee could pick up the pieces if Daffodil Sweet and Ima Happy Cat get carried away up front.
