Bai and Bai wins duel

Bai and Bai ($5.80) sat just behind favored Somethinaboutlaura, pinning her on the rail down the stretch as the two engaged in a head-and-head duel over the final quarter-mile before Bai and Bai edged clear to win Saturday's Foster City Handicap at Bay Meadows by a length.

Somethinaboutlaura stumbled as she left the starting gate but was able to get the lead in the one-mile race, cruising through moderate fractions as Bai and Bai sat a length off her through the opening half-mile of the race. Midway around the second turn, jockey Roberto Gonzalez asked Bai and Bai, who got alongside Somethinaboutlaura but couldn't put her away until the final 50 yards. She won the race by one length in 1:35.94.
