DEL MAR, Calif. - From the beginning to almost the end of Saturday’s 11-race program at Del Mar, trainer Bob Baffert’s all-powerful stable displayed winners who could have major roles in national races this fall. Mission Beach, a colt by Curlin, began the day with a maiden-race win at six furlongs for 2-year-olds, disputing the pace throughout before going clear by 1 1/4 lengths. Ridden by Ramon Vazquez, Mission Beach ($3.20) had his debut on Saturday and ran six furlongs in 1:10.63. Mission Beach earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 72. “I thought he could win first time out,” Baffert said later in the afternoon. “He handled everything really well.” Owned by a partnership that includes SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stable, Mission Beach was purchased for $400,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. :: Get Del Mar Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Taris won stakes at distances ranging from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. The maiden-race win is expected to lead to a start for Mission Beach in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs on Sept. 10, a race Baffert has won a staggering 16 times in the last 27 years. Nearly five hours after Mission Beach’s win, the Baffert-trained Adare Manor won her third consecutive stakes, and first in a Grade 1, in the $400,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles. Adare Manor ($3.20) stalked pacesetter Elm Drive to the final furlong and held off a late threat from Desert Dawn to win by a length for her sixth win in 12 career starts. “She has so much class,” Baffert said in the winner’s circle. “To get a Grade 1 is fantastic. I felt a lot of pressure because of the way she’s been running. It’s nice to keep the winning streak going.” The win gave Adare Manor a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. In the spring, Adare Manor won two Grade 2 stakes at Santa Anita for owner Michael Petersen – the Santa Maria Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on April 29, and the Santa Margarita Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on June 10. In both races, the 4-year-old Adare Manor led throughout. The Hirsch was Adare Manor’s fourth stakes win. She won her stakes debut in the Grade 3 Las Virgenes at Santa Anita in February 2022, pulling away to win by 13 lengths. Baffert said that Adare Manor will have one more start before the BC Distaff, in the Grade 2 Zenyatta Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 1. Trainer Phil D’Amato has BC Distaff hopes for Desert Dawn, who was third in the Santa Margarita earlier this year and third in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in 2022 in her two most recent starts at 1 1/8 miles. The BC Distaff at 1 1/8 miles is a better fit for Desert Dawn than 1 1/16 miles, D’Amato said. “We’ll see if we can get to the Breeders’ Cup, but Santa Anita is a tough place to come from off the pace,” D’Amato said. “She needs to get her feet under her and come with a run.” While Baffert and D’Amato have two of the most high-profile stables in California, trainer Dean Pederson has one of the smaller teams at Del Mar this summer with 12 runners. On Saturday, Pederson won his richest race of 2023 in the race prior to the Clement Hirsch, the $150,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes for statebreds at 1 1/16 miles on turf with the veteran gelding Carmelita’s Man. Carmelita’s Man won the California Dreamin’ Stakes for the second consecutive year. Saturday’s race was Carmelita’s Man’s first win in six starts in 2023. Carmelita’s Man ($13.60) caught 9-10 favorite Kings River Knight in the final furlong to win by three-quarters of a length. Carmelita’s Man, a 6-year-old gelding, races for Larry and Ann Jett. “For people like us, that makes our summer,” Pederson said. Carmelita’s Man was third to Kings River Knight in the Crystal Water Stakes for statebred turf milers at Santa Anita on May 28. Carmelita’s Man won the 2022 Crystal Water. “We’re at a crossroads with him,” Pederson said. “He’s getting a little older and the competition is getting younger.” Pederson, 61, had a brilliant Del Mar meeting in 2022, winning eight races from 12 runners. “Everything went perfect,” Pederson said. “Carmelita’s Man won two races – one by a head and the other by a nose.” Carmelita’s Man’s win on Saturday was Pederson’s first win of the meeting with his fourth runner. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
