Baffert works West Coast, Collected on training track

The works were unconventional but served their purpose.
Bob Baffert chose to work the Grade 1 winners Collected and West Coast on Santa Anita’s infield training track on Monday in advance of the $16 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 27. Baffert wanted to work the pair on the main track, but that track was closed because of expected wet weather on Monday.
Instead, West Coast worked six furlongs in 1:13, while Collected worked in 1:13.40 on the training track, which is slightly longer than six furlongs in circumference.

Collected and West Coast were second and third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 4. Collected was third in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. West Coast has not raced since the BC Classic.
They worked separately on Monday.
“They looked as good as they could look on the training track,” Baffert said. “They cruised around there.”
Baffert said on Monday the workouts were moved forward by a day because of weather.
“They were going to work tomorrow but there’s rain,” he said. “I wanted to sneak them in and give them a breeze.”
