CYPRESS, Calif. - An eager Nothing Like You surprised jockey Juan Hernandez when she took an early lead in Saturday’s Grade 2 Starlet Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos. But there was nothing about the way Nothing Like You sustained her lead that was out of the ordinary to Hernandez. Nothing Like You extended her advantage through the long stretch at Los Alamitos, pulling away to win the $200,500 Starlet Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths. Nothing Like You gave Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert his seventh consecutive win in the track’s leading race for 2-year-old Thoroughbred fillies. Baffert won the Starlet three times when it was held at Hollywood Park before that track’s closure in 2013. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. On Saturday, Nothing Like You ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.78 and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 79. “Once I saw her on the backside with that long stride, you could tell she was in control of the race,” Baffert said. Starting from the inside in a field of six, Nothing Like You was one of four fillies within a length of the lead in the early strides before she took a half-length lead after a quarter-mile. “The others broke better than me,” Hernandez said. “I was hoping to sit behind them. When I grabbed a hold, she took off. After that, she was comfortable." Nothing Like You set an early pace of 23.24 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.40 for a half-mile. Chatalas, winner of the Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita in October, moved into a challenging position in early stretch, but was unable to keep pace with Nothing Like You through the stretch. Great Forty Eight, a 29-1 outsider, closed from fourth on the backstretch to be second in the stretch. Ridden by apprentice jockey J.G. Torrealba, Great Forty Eight drifted out with a furlong remaining, forcing jockey Antonio Fresu to alter course on Chatalas. After the incident, Chatalas faded to finish fourth behind Flynn’s Chance. The stewards inquired into the incident in the stretch and disqualified Great Forty Eight from second to fourth. Flynn’s Choice, a maiden, was promoted to second, while Chatalas was moved to third. Great Forty Eight was followed in the official order of finish by Pacific Rose and Grazia, who is trained by Baffert. Grazia, a maiden race winner in her debut on Nov. 12, was expected to be near the front, but was fourth and third on the backstretch before fading from contention. The Starlet Stakes was the third consecutive win for Nothing Like You, who is by Malibu Moon and races for the partnership of Georgia Antley Hunt, Jeff Giglio and John Rogitz. Nothing Like You won her debut at a mile in a maiden race at Santa Anita in her fourth start on Oct. 14 and her stakes debut with a nose victory in the Desi Arnaz Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 18. Nothing Like You has earned $237,160 in her six-race career. She was purchased for $190,000 at a 2-year-olds in-training sale in Florida in April. Hernandez has been aboard for Nothing Like You’s last four starts, beginning with a fourth-place finish in a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on Oct. 1. “She’s improving every race, and it looks like this is her distance,” Hernandez said of the Starlet distance. “When she ran short, she was having a hard time winning. She’s a big filly and likes two turns best. “It looks like she can go farther. It will be fun to see where she takes us.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
