The dynasty was established years ago. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has won the Starlet Stakes for 2-year-olds fillies at Los Alamitos annually for a record eight years, and three times at Hollywood Park before its closure in 2013. The late Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas won the race eight times. On Saturday, Baffert has three chances to extend his dominance when Consequent, Himika, and Nimah start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Starlet Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. The Baffert-trained fillies represent half the field. Doug O’Neill starts Cashed and Cosmic Heat, while Peter Miller has entered Jewlz, the winner of a $32,000 claiming race for maidens at a mile at Del Mar on Nov. 22. Himika, a winner of 3 of 6 starts, is the only multiple winner in the Starlet field, the only stakes winner in the group, and has the highest earnings of $222,822. She is also one of four fillies in the field that have raced on or near the lead. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Himika, who drew the inside post and will be ridden by Tyler Baze, has had mixed form in recent months. Himika won the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar in August, but was fourth in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 6, and fifth of six in the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita in her only start around two turns on Oct. 4. Himika rebounded to win the Anoakia Stakes at six furlongs at Santa Anita on Oct. 19, but was second by three-quarters of a length at 1-5 behind Revera in the Desi Arnaz Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 16. Revera was held out of the Starlet in favor of a scheduled start in the $100,000 Santa Ynez Stakes at seven furlongs for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita on Jan. 3, trainer John Sadler said on Thursday. Nimah drew the outside post and will be ridden by Juan Hernandez, who was aboard all three of Baffert’s entrants in their last starts. Nimah led throughout a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 23 as the 7-10 favorite in her debut. Consequent, the mount of Kazushi Kimura, is a danger from off the pace. By Into Mischief, Consequent won her debut in a maiden race at a mile at Del Mar on Nov. 14, closing from sixth of nine as the 6-5 favorite. Consequent, a full sister to the two-time stakes winner Show Card, showed her inexperience in the win. She took the lead in the final sixteenth, and appeared to lose concentration before winning by a half-length. Consequent has had two quick workouts at Santa Anita since her win, including five furlongs in 59.60 seconds on Sunday. If there is a filly capable of beating the Baffert-trio, it may be Cashed. Trained by Doug O’Neill for owners and breeders Paul and Zillah Reddam, Cashed won a maiden race for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs in her fourth start at Santa Anita on Sept. 27, and was a well-beaten second in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies for statebreds at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Oct. 31 after setting the early pace. Cashed was fitted with blinkers in her five starts earlier this year, but will not wear the equipment Saturday. “We’re optimistic she’ll finish strong enough to get a big piece of it,” O’Neill wrote in a text message on Thursday. Cashed, Cosmic Heat, and Nimah were supplemented to the Starlet for $7,500 when entries were taken on Wednesday. Cosmic Heat, owned by Burns Racing and Dan Hudock, was transferred from trainer Peter Eurton to O’Neill “a few days ago,” O’Neill said on Thursday. Cosmic Heat closed from last of six to finish third in the Desi Arnaz Stakes, beaten five lengths. The Starlet Stakes will be Cosmic Heat’s first start around two turns. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
