All three will be active on closing weekend. Baffert, who returned from a well-publicized 90-day suspension in early July, does not have any starters on Friday, but has five entered on Saturday and nine on Sunday, including three in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. D’Amato is even busier, with five entries for Friday, 12 on Saturday and nine on Sunday. On Saturday, D’Amato has three runners in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and in the Grade 2 John Mabee Stakes for fillies and mares on turf, including top contenders Going Global and Going to Vegas. O’Neill also has 26 runners at Del Mar this weekend – seven on Friday, 12 on Saturday and seven on Sunday. He has an excellent chance in Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante with Vegas Magic and has three runners in Sunday’s Grade 3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf. Of the three leading trainers, Baffert has been the most effective, winning with 26.5 percent of his 64 runners. D’Amato and Richard Baltas tied for the title in 2019 with 18 wins. Peter Miller led all trainers with 28 wins in 2020 and 26 wins last year. Through Thursday, Miller was tied for fifth with 13 wins. The jockeys race is all but over. Through Thursday, Juan Hernandez has won 45 races, 19 more than Umberto Rispoli, who was second. Ramon Vazquez was third with 22 wins. For Hernandez, this will be his first title at a Del Mar summer meeting. He led all riders last fall at Del Mar with 17 wins. Hernandez won the riding title at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting earlier this year, benefiting from the departure of former leading rider Flavien Prat to the East Coast in the spring. Hernandez will serve a three-day suspension from Sept. 16-18 for causing interference in the 10th race at Del Mar on Sept. 4 aboard Fun to Dream, who was disqualified from second and placed ninth. The suspension covers the opening weekend of the two-week Los Alamitos September meeting.
