Bad Beat Brian set a course record and Just Might became racing’s newest millionaire in an allowance-level turf sprint last Friday at Churchill Downs.
Bad Beat Brian, a 6-year-old gelding, won by 1 1/4 lengths while completing the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:01.53. The gelding was second by a head to Caravel in the Grade 2 Shakertown at Keeneland, and then finished sixth in the Grade 2 Twin Spires Turf Sprint on the Kentucky Derby undercard.
Smokin’ Jay overhauled Just Might by a neck for second in the salty field, with multiple graded winner Bound for Nowhere another head back in fourth.
Just Might, a 7-year-old homebred for Griffon Farms and Michelle Lovell, moved his career mark to 43-11-8-8 with earnings of $1,009,575. The gelding is a nine-time stakes winner on both dirt and turf.
“We couldn’t be prouder,” Lovell’s barn posted on Twitter. “He may be modestly bred … but his heart is as rich as any horse you can find. He’s a throwback, he’s our champ, and now he’s our million-dollar man.”
