Back-to-back stakes winner Quarry in midst of break

Quarry, winner of the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 12 for his second consecutive stakes win, is in the midst of a rest at owner Henry Witt Jr.’s farm in Texas with no specific timeline on a return to racing.
Trainer Jerry Gourneau said on Wednesday that Quarry was considered for Sunday’s Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park, but that the timeline between the Super Derby and that race was not an ideal fit.
“It was too quick to run him in the Remington Derby,” he said. “We’d have been the first or second choice.
“We’re more worried about the horse. We decided to kick him out.
“He’s been campaigned kind of hard.”
Quarry won the Grade 3 Canadian Derby and Century Mile in Calgary, Alberta, on Aug. 22 before he was vanned to Louisiana Downs. Quarry was claimed for $80,000 at Churchill Downs in June. He has since won 2 of 5 starts and earned $250,235.
Gourneau said he does not have any races selected for Quarry’s comeback.
“We’ll just have to see,” he said. “The horse will tell us when he’s ready. He hasn’t had a break since his 2-year-old year.”
