Saturday’s $150,000 Easy Goer Stakes on the Belmont Stakes undercard is a “Dropdown Derby” of sorts for at least half of the six-horse field. Alwaysmining, the morning-line favorite in this 1 1/16-mile event for 3-year-olds, raced against prime Belmont Stakes win threat War of Will three weeks ago in the Preakness. Outshine and Grumps Little Tots both faced Belmont morning-line favorite Tacitus in the Wood Memorial in their most recent starts. The Easy Goer is the first of 10 stakes on Saturday’s massive Belmont Stakes card. It goes as the third of 13 races with a scheduled post of 12:47 p.m. Eastern. :: Belmont Stakes one-stop shop: Get Clocker Reports, PPs, packages, and more Truth be told, while Alwaysmining, Outshine, and Grumps Little Tots were in with much better competition in their latest outings, none were exactly competitive. Alwaysmining held good early striking position in the Preakness, in which he went off at only 6-1, but gave way through the stretch to finish 11th of 13. Grumps Little Tots and Outshine did not have the smoothest starts in the Wood, but were never in contention and were a distant ninth and 10th under the wire, respectively. However, each have back races that make them players in the context of this race. Alwaysmining won six straight before the Preakness, five of them stakes, and most by big win margins. But he also drew some very favorable pace setups during that run. Outshine went off at only 7-2 in the Wood, and that is because he was coming off a game second to Tacitus in the Tampa Bay Derby. Outshine also ran well winning an allowance sprint at Gulfstream three starts back in his 3-year-old debut. Grumps Little Tots was a 46-1 longshot in the Wood because he hadn’t raced in almost two months and had only just recorded his maiden victory. But his maiden win at Aqueduct in February was a decisive one in an extended one-turn race not unlike the Easy Goer. The three remaining entrants are Still Dreaming, Dream Maker, and Majid. Still Dreaming won a first-level allowance sprint at Laurel two starts back, but in three stakes attempts to date, he hasn’t finished better than fifth. Dream Maker has started in such races as the Hopeful, Breeders’ Futurity, Tampa Bay Derby, and Blue Grass, but was not close in any of them. He did, however, finally hit the board in a stakes race most recently, finishing third in the Pat Day Mile, though he was beaten almost eight lengths. Majid has won three straight since moving into Rudy Rodriguez’s barn, including a front-running score over the Belmont main track last time out. Majid figures to be part of the early pace with Alwaysmining, and the two might well set the table for stalker types such as Outshine, who would be much too tough for this group, anyway, if he were able to duplicate his Tampa Bay Derby effort, and Grumps Little Tots, who could snag a significant share here at a square price.
