Baby Nina wins maiden in Miss Ohio Stakes
Baby Nina won her maiden in the $75,000 Miss Ohio Stakes on Saturday at Thistledown, where she drew out by nine lengths over Candy Lane. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third to 2-5 favorite Drillit.
The Miss Ohio was a 5 1/2-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies bred in Ohio.
Baby Nina ($7.80) stalked the early pace set by Candy Lane, who took the field through an opening quarter in 22.64 seconds. The eventual winner moved to the fore through a half-mile in 47.60 seconds and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:07.28.
Scott Spieth rode the winner for trainer Anthony Quartarolo.
Baby Nina was making the second start of her career, off a sixth-place finish as the 3-5 favorite in a maiden special weight for Ohio-breds on June 23 at Thistledown. She is a daughter of Flatter and the mare Whitelacenpromises, who has produced two other stakes winners in Dubacious and Silver Tongued.
Baby Nina is owned by the partnership of Loooch Racing Stables, Raquel Ritchie, and Cristina Ritchie.
