Aztec Sense crowned Parx Racing's 2018 Horse of the Year

Parx Racing recently honored its best performers of 2018. Aztec Sense was the Bensalem, Pa., track’s Horse of the Year and top older male. Claimed by owner Joseph Besecker and trainer Jorge Navarro for $12,500 in August 2017, Aztec Sense went 8 for 8 in 2018. He won three $100,000 stakes at Parx and the $196,000 Claiming Crown Jewel at Gulfstream Park.
The other champions were Remsen winner Maximus Mischief, 2-year-old male; Tara’s Talent, 2-year-old filly; Navy Commander, 3-year-old male; Grade 3 Victory Ride winner Dixie Serenade, 3-year-old filly; and Zipper’s Hero, older female. Champagne Chuck, who went 7 for 19 at Parx in 2018, was the winningest horse of the year at Parx and was voted top claiming horse.

John Servis was honored for winning his first training title at his home track. Frankie Pennington was the leading rider for an unprecedented fifth straight year. He has won six Parx riding titles. Jann Hernandez was the top apprentice jockey. Jagger Inc. and Top Notch Racing tied for leading owner.
Special achievement awards were presented to trainer Uriah St. Lewis for Discreet Lover’s win in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Luis Carvajal Jr. for Imperial Hint’s Grade 1 wins in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap and Vosburgh, and Servis for Jaywalk being voted an Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly and winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
