Awesome Feather cataloged for F-T November sale

Mike Welsch|Oct 31, 2010

Anybody who’d like the opportunity to own a Breeders’ Cup starter, perhaps even a Breeders’ Cup winner, may have the chance to do just that when Awesome Feather goes into the sales ring on Nov. 7, just two days after she participates in the BC Juvenile Fillies.

Awesome Feather is cataloged as a racing/broodmare prospect and as Hip No. 10 in the Fasig-Tipton sale.

“I prefer to race my horses in south Florida, so if she does as well as I believe she is going to do in the Breeders’ Cup and shows she can be a world-class contender in the future, somebody who races in New York or California needs to own her,” said Fred Brei, who owns and bred Awesome Feather.

Awesome Feather will enter the Juvenile Fillies perfect in five career starts, four of those wins coming in stakes, including all three legs of Calder’s Florida Stallion Stakes. Brei also was the owner and breeder of Jackson Bend who swept the 2009 Stallion Stakes after which Brei sold a majority interest in the colt to owner Robert LaPenta.

“I’ve had opportunities to sell part of this filly like I did Jackson Bend,” Brei said. “But it’s just a different situation when you have a filly rather than a colt like Jackson Bend. With a potential stallion prospect, it’s quite easy, but it becomes a lot more complicated situation when you have to plan a broodmare’s career and I don’t want to really have to worry about that part of it.”

Brei said even though Awesome Feather is unbeaten, he’s not quite sure where she stacks up in the division.

“We really don’t have any idea how good this filly is yet,” Brei said. “But we’re going up against the best in the Juvenile Fillies, so one way or the other we’re going to find out on Friday.”
