Avie's Mineshaft upsets Dixie Moon in Wonder Where

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — In her first turf start, Avie’s Mineshaft rallied to upset 1-5 favorite Dixie Moon in Sunday’s $225,000 Wonder Where Stakes, the final leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara series for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.
Avie’s Mineshaft ($12.20) trailed the five-horse field on the backstretch in the 10-furlong event, as Dixie Moon pressed the leading longshots, Double Latte and Glamanation.
To stay ahead of a closing Avie’s Mineshaft, Dixie Moon made a three-wide bid to the front on the far turn. Dixie Moon established a clear advantage in the stretch, but she began to tire in the final furlong, as Avie’s Minshaft dug in to win by 1 1/4 lengths, in a time of 2:03.67.
Safe to Say rallied belatedly on the outside for third. She was followed by Double Latte and Glamanation.
The victory gave jockey Gary Boulanger a sweep of both Woodbine stakes on Sunday. Earlier on the card, he took the Grade 3 Seagram Cup on Decorated Soldier.
“I had a relatively easy trip,” Boulanger said. “I worked her on the grass once, and I told Josie [Carroll] she really got over it well. Her pedigree says she can go this far. She’s been a grinding kind of filly on the (Tapeta). She doesn’t give up. She keeps trying. I think she’s gotten better every race I’ve rode her in. She’s maturing. She’s a strong filly, and today she showed that she’s got the stamina and the try to get it done.”
Trained by Josie Carroll, Avie’s Mineshaft earned $135,000 in her initial stakes score. She is owned by her breeder, Ivan Dalos.
