Avie's Flatter impresses with Coronation Futurity win

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Avie’s Flatter staked his claim for Canadian champion male 2-year-old honors Sunday at Woodbine with an impressive score in the $225,000 Coronation Futurity.
Avie’s Flatter ($3.20) raced nearly five lengths off the lead while five wide on the backstretch, as D Magician set moderate fractions in the nine-furlong test for Canadian-breds.
Avie’s Flatter and Federal Law both began to mount a wide rally exiting the far turn, and Avie’s Flatter kicked in strongly to prevail by a half-length in a time of 1:51.73 on the Tapeta.
Federal Law dug in through the final furlong to finish a clear second over Moon Swings. Tripwire, Jammin Still, D Magician, and Samurai Queen completed the order of finish in the 115th running of the race.
Eurico Da Silva got a leg up from trainer Josie Carroll on the once-beaten Avie’s Flatter, who was coming off an authoritative victory in the Cup and Saucer Stakes on turf.
“When he broke, he stumbled a little bit,” Da Silva said. “And then I was in a position where the pace was not very fast. It took me a little bit to relax him. When I got to the backside, I said I’m going, because I had so much horse. But then everybody started going, and I said you know what, I’m waiting. At the three-eighths pole when I asked him, I had a lot of horse, and he just closed so quick.”
Avie’s Flatter earned $135,000 for owner Ivan Dalos, who bred the handsome son of Flatter under the nom de plume Tall Oaks Farm.
