Avenue of Flags euthanized

Avenue of Flags, sire of 2009 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner California Flag, was euthanized last Saturday after injuring himself in a paddock accident, according to the New Mexico Horse Breeders Association.

A son of Seattle Slew, Avenue of Flags was 22 and had been standing at James Wasson's Winner's Circle Bloodstock Farms in Las Cruces, N. M. for a private fee this year.

Avenue of Flags stood for most of his stud career at Betty and the late John Mabee's Golden Eagle Farm in California. The Mabees bred and raced him. A son of the Pass the Glass mare Beautiful Glass, Avenue of Flags was Grade 2-placed as a runner.

At stud, he got California Flag, a multiple Grade 3 winner, as well as Grade 1 winners Joey Franco and Notable Career, and Grade 1-placed Fleet Lady and Belle's Flag.

Avenue of Flags was a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Jeanne Jones.
