Australia: What a Girl gets more ground in Canterbury handicap

Steve Andersen|Jul 20, 2020

The Australian 3-year-old filly What a Girl is a nose away from having two wins in her first three starts.

On July 4 at Newcastle Racecourse, What a Girl rallied from last in a field of 10 to just miss winning a handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs. What a Girl closed from fourth to win her debut in a maiden race at seven furlongs in April at 25-1.

If longer races are vital for her success, What a Girl has an excellent chance to win for the second time in her career in a handicap for fillies and mares at 7 3/4 furlongs on Wednesday at Canterbury Park in Sydney.

What a Girl, by Frankel, was eighth of 11 in her debut against winners at 6 1/2 furlongs on June 17 at Warwick Farm, racing as close as fourth before fading from contention.

What a Girl, trained by Chris Waller will carry 120 pounds, a significant weight break compared to topweight Tochi at 130 pounds. Our Winnie was assigned 132 pounds, but will carry 125.6 pounds because of the presence of apprentice jockey Tom Sherry.

Those mares are not rated as contenders in a field of eight compared to Peace of Mind (129 pounds) or Elegant Grace (115.7).

Peace of Mind won at a mile in January and was third by three lengths in a handicap at 7 3/4 furlongs on the Kensington course at Royal Randwick on July 1. Peace of Mind tends to run as a stalker.

Elegant Grace, a winner of two of her last four starts since early May, is starting at 7 3/4 furlongs for the first time and could be near the front behind expected pacesetter Tochi.

First post time at Canterbury Park is 10:50 p.m. Eastern, or 7:50 p.m. Pacific, on Tuesday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
