Australia: Two Big Fari a deserving favorite despite losing streak and weight

Steve Andersen|Aug 18, 2023

Never mind the 22-race losing streak since 2020 or his status as the topweight at 138.8 pounds, Two Big Fari is a deserving favorite in the minor Narromine Cup at tiny Narromine Racecourse in Australia on Saturday evening.

An 8-year-old gelding, Two Big Fari has won 7 of 34 starts in his career and has kept good company in recent starts, with frequent appearances at the tougher tracks in the Sydney metropolitan area.

In his last start, Two Big Fari was sixth by 1 2/3 lengths in a handicap at 7 3/4 furlongs on the infield Kensington course at Royal Randwick Racecourse Aug. 2. Last November, he finished fifth of 20 in the $320,000 Little Dance Stakes at a mile at Randwick, closing to miss by a length.

The Narromine Cup does not feature that class of runners.

In the Narromine Cup, Two Big Fari figures to be a factor from off the pace under jockey Madeline Owen. If Two Big Fari is beaten, there are several capable of winning, notably Too Good To Be Tru and Notabadidea.

Too Good To Be Tru, who will carry 124.5 pounds, won the Maclean Cup at seven furlongs at Grafton Racecourse July 16, and was sixth of eight by 2 1/2 lengths in a one-mile handicap at Newcastle Aug. 10.

Notabadidea, who will carry 122.3 pounds, will have his 75th start in the Narromine Cup. Winless in his last six races, the 8-year-old Notabadidea was beaten a short head in a seven-furlong handicap at Wellington July 31, and was fourth by 1 3/4 lengths in the Forbes Cup at a mile at Forbes Racecourse just six days later.

Notabadidea is quick enough to lead, but also effective as a stalker. The versatile tactics may work in the veteran’s favor in the Narromine Cup, which drew a full field of 12.

Narromine has a nine-race program beginning at 9:55 p.m. Eastern or 6:55 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
