Australia: Trajection, Whispered meet again in handicap at Newcastle
The filly Trajection and the gelding Whispered were separated by a head at the finish of a seven-furlong handicap on May 9 at Newcastle Racecourse in Australia.
The two Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds seem to be stuck with each other, at least regarding another meeting in a seven-furlong handicap Tuesday at Newcastle.
Whispered will carry joint top weight of 133 pounds with Chalmers. Trajection has been assigned 131 pounds, but will carry 126.5 pounds because of the presence of apprentice jockey Tom Sherry.
Sherry replaces Andrew Gibbons on Trajection. Gibbons has the mount on the Irish-bred 6-year-old Cullingworth, who has not raced since December. Gibbons knows where Trajection will be in the field of 11 – she is a threat from off the pace.
Trained by Kim Waugh, Trajection has won 3 of 6 starts this year, with two of the wins at Newcastle. In the May 9 race, Trajection closed from ninth in a field of 11. Whispered tends to race near the front, while Cullingworth is more of a closer.
They could all be in early pursuit of Reiby’s Regent, who led through a handicap at 6 3/4 furlongs on May 14 at Wyong Racecourse, a victory that ended an eight-race losing streak over a span of 13 months for the 4-year-old gelding by Uncle Mo.
Tuesday’s race is a notable drop in class for Chalmers, who was 10th of 15 in the Country Cup at Scone Racecourse on May 15, but won a handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs at Port Macquarie in April.
The seven-race program at Newcastle begins at 10:45 p.m. Eastern, or 7:45 p.m. Pacific, on Monday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
Whispered is owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Australia, who also starts Golwen. A 3-year-old gelding, Golwen won for the second time in his eight-race career in a seven-furlong handicap on May 7 at Kembla Grange Racecourse.
Whispered and Golwen are trained by James Cummings, who had two wins from 13 runners at four venues on Saturday.
