Sir Delius chased home two of Australia’s leading fillies and mares when he finished third in Group 1 races in February and March. On Saturday at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Sir Delius was the runner impossible to catch in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at 1 1/4 miles.  Sir Delius, who paid $11.70 in American pools, finished about 2 1/4 lengths in front of 26-1 Lindermann. The previously unbeaten filly Autumn Glow could only finish third at 1-4, losing second in the final strides. Autumn Glow, ridden by James McDonald, won her first 11 starts, and was beaten slightly less than 2 1/2 lengths in the $3.52 million Queen Elizabeth, her first start at 1 1/4 miles. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for international racing, including Australia “She relaxed and travelled into it beautifully,” McDonald told the press. “Credit to the winner. He sustained that speed. He was up there fighting and too good on the day.” Sir Delius, ridden by Craig Williams for trainers Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse, was never far from the front and caught pacesetter Light Infantry Man in early stretch. He had a commanding lead through the final furong. A 5-year-old British-bred horse by Frankel, Sir Delius has won 7 of 13 starts in a career that began in France in 2024. In Europe, Sir Delius was third in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris in the summer of 2024, and eighth behind Bluestocking in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris that fall. Jean-Claude Rouget trained Sir Delius in France. Sir Delius was purchased for approximately $1.69 million at a horses-in-training sale in Britain in the fall of 2024. Sir Delius began his Australian career in May 2025. In seven starts in Australia, Sir Delius has won four times. Sir Delius won consecutive Group 1 races in the later months of 2025 – the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield in September, and the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington in October. Earlier this year, Sir Delius was third to Autumn Glow in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes at a mile at Randwick in February, and third behind Aeliana in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill Gardens in March. Aeliana was scratched from the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Bott indicated that Sir Delius would be pointed to major stakes from September to October during the Australian spring. “I’m delighted he’s been able to get back to the top level,” Bott said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
