A low weight assignment was not the primary reason the Southern Hemisphere 3-year-old filly Sheza Alibi won her first start against older males in Saturday’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. Carrying 108 pounds, 21 less than topweight Gringotts, Sheza Alibi swept into contention with a wide rally and won the $3.85 million Doncaster Mile by a remarkable 4 1/4 lengths under jockey Jamie Melham. “I got pushed a bit wide and got back a bit too far, but we got there in about a few strides and she just sailed away from them,” Melham told the press. The weight assignment forced Melham to fast, she said. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for international racing, including Australia “I’m very happy to be hungry to be riding a horse like this,” Melham said. Sheza Alibi paid $3.10 in American pools. Autumn Boy, a 7-1 chance and the only other horse in the field with single-digit odds, finished second. Autumn Boy carried 114.6 pounds. Gringotts (13-1) finished fourth, beaten 6 1/4 lengths. Sheza Alibi, who is by the Deep Impact sire Saxon Warrior, is trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman for Fred Noffke, a cattle farmer from Queensland. The Doncaster Mile, one of the top races at the distance in Australia, was Sheza Alibi’s seventh win in 10 starts, and her fifth consecutive victory. She has won two Group 1 races this year, including the Randwick Guineas for Southern Hemisphere 3-year-old fillies on March 7. The Doncaster Mile was the richest of four Group 1 races on Saturday’s program at Randwick. The 5-year-old mare Joliestar stretched her 2026 unbeaten streak to three races, all stakes, with a win by slightly more than a half-length in the T.J. Smith Stakes at six furlongs. Ridden by James McDonald for trainer Chris Waller, Joliestar closed from fourth in a field of nine. She paid $5.50 as the favorite, beating Giga Kick, who has won two Group 1 races and the $9.3 million Everest Stakes at six furlongs in 2022 when that race was not a group-level race. Waller said Joliestar will be sent to Britain for sprints at the famous Royal Ascot meeting in June. McDonald and Waller teamed to win the day’s first Group 1 race with Campione D’Italia in the $694,000 Inglis Sires’ Stakes for Southern Hemisphere 2-year-olds at seven furlongs. Campione D’Italia ($6) finished three-quarters of a length in front of 15-1 Miss Chanel in a field of 13. Campione D’Italia won for the second time in four starts. A colt by Snitzel, Campione D’Italia was a troubled fourth in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at six furlongs at Rosehill Gardens on March 21. The 3-year-old Green Spaces, sixth behind Sheza Alibi in the Randwick Guineas on March 7, won his first Group 1 race in the $1.38 million ATC Australian Derby at 1 1/2 miles. Green Spaces finished slightly more than three lengths in front Dezignation, who was more than 100-1 in American pools and was a 150-1 chance in Australia. Green Spaces paid $10.40. Observer, the 7-5 favorite, finished fifth, beaten 4 1/2 lengths. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
