Australia: Seymour Cup distance ideal for Noname Lane

Steve Andersen|Sep 30, 2022

Give Noname Lane a mile, or a distance close to it, and chances are the Australian gelding will take the race.

Noname Lane has won 8 of 21 starts, with five of those wins at distances of 7 1/2 furlongs or a mile. The specialty makes Noname Lane an intriguing runner in the $127,900 Seymour Cup at a mile at Bendigo Racecourse on Saturday evening across American time zones.

Trained by Will Clarken, Noname Lane has won four of his five starts since early June. He was sixth in a lucrative handicap at 1 1/16 miles at Caulfield Racecourse in July in his lone loss during that span and did not race again for nearly two months before winning a handicap at 5 1/4 furlongs at Morphettville on Sept. 3.

Noname Lane won the Balaklava Cup at a mile at Balaklava Racecourse on Sept. 14 by a half-length after stalking the pace in his most recent start. In June, Noname Lane won consecutive starts in handicaps at 7 1/2 furlongs and a mile.

As of early Friday, Noname Lane was an interesting 6-1 in early betting behind Sir Davy (5-2) and Attractable (5-1).

Sir Davy has won 3 of 5 starts at a mile, and was second by two lengths at the same distance in the Winter Championship Stakes at Flemington on July 3. Tuvalu, who won the Winter Championship, was later third by less than a half-length in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at seven furlongs at Caulfield on Sept. 17.

In his only start since the Winter Championship, Sir Davy was fifth in a tough handicap at 1 1/16 miles at Flemington on Sept. 10, losing by 3 1/2 lengths.

Attractable won a one-mile handicap on the synthetic track at Ballarat Racecourse on Sept. 16, and has won 3 of 10 starts on turf. Similar to Noname Lane, Attractable tends to run as a stalker, while Sir Davy runs from farther off the pace.

They are part of a field of 15 in the Seymour Cup. Bendigo has an eight-race program beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern or 7 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
