Australia: Satin Rain has already won over course and at distance of handicap at Gosford

Steve Andersen|Oct 06, 2020

In February, Satin Rain won for the second time in her career in a handicap at 1 3/16 miles at Gosford Racecourse in Australia. Eight months later, in the midst of a seven-race losing streak, Satin Rose starts in a handicap at the same distance at Gosford on Thursday.

Since the February win, Satin Rain was tried in two group stakes in April, finishing seventh in both races. More recently, Satin Rain has had three starts since early September, including a game second by a head in a handicap at 1 /8 miles at Hawkesbury Racecourse on Sept. 24.

Trained by Anthony Cummings, Satin Rain is a 4-year-old filly who has won 2 of 17 starts. She will carry 123 pounds at Gosford and will be ridden by Regan Bayliss, who has been aboard for her last three starts.

Satin Rain is part of a field of eight, a group that includes Tampering and Brash Sammy. None of the runners have won in their last four starts, although Tampering did win consecutive races in April.

Highly Desired, fourth in the Bathurst Cup at the track of the same name, is the 129-pound starting highweight. Tampering will carry 127.8 pounds, while Brash Sammy will carry 114.6 pounds because of the presence of apprentice jockey Tyler Schiller.

Tampering, a winner of 3 of 11 starts for trainer Kerry Packer, was second and seventh in handicaps in September. In May, Tampering was fourth, beaten five lengths, in a handicap at 1 1/4 miles against a tougher field at Royal Randwick. The race was won by Stockman, who was midway through a three-race winning streak in that race.

Brash Sammy, a 3-year-old, has never won beyond five furlongs, but was third by 2 1/4 lengths in a handicap at 1 1/4 miles at Kembla Grange on Sept. 26, leading with a quarter-mile remaining in the longest race of his nine-race career.

The handicap is the third race on an eight-race program that begins at 10:25 p.m. Eastern, or 7:25 p.m. Pacific, on Wednesday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
